A Quantum Leap Forward in DPF Technology

Passive DPF filters trap soot, which can hinder the reduction of inlet temperature during an engine’s thermal regeneration process. Over multiple regeneration cycles, the soot heats up to very high temperatures, eventually melting the DPF filter.

Placing passive filters away from the generator can also be problematic. Specifically, passive filters need the heat of combustion to regenerate, and if they are too far from the source, the exhaust cools by the time it gets to the filter, preventing the DPF from regenerating.

In cases of intermittent demand, a passive filter may not be as effective. A generator constantly runs and heats up, enabling the filter to run quite efficiently. However, standby generators used in data centers or in mission-critical infrastructure like hospitals do not run for more than 15 minutes at a time.

The system will never get hot enough to properly regenerate the passive filters, resulting in clogging and plugging and ultimately, hindering their performance at times of power outage.

Rypos’ ADPF bypasses this with an automated electrical regeneration to monitor filter back pressure and temperature. ADPFs are heated at 700°C to incinerate the trapped soot containing toxic contaminants, enhancing filtration integrity while maintaining a low back temperature that maximizes engine performance. Today, Rypos’ filters are proven to consume less energy, reduce lifecycle operating costs, and accomplish up to 95 percent diesel PM removal.

Better Innovation for More Optimal Results

Rypos technology is more than just a filter. Its DPF system can be adjusted to specific regeneration cycles based on the required operating parameters, reducing undue back pressure that would impact engine operation while optimizing the particular matter removal.

The system regenerates electrically, unlike the passive filters that need to burn excess fuel to regenerate. This is particularly useful for varied marine applications, like a harbor craft, which must idle for 20 minutes, run flat out and then idle for another 20 or 40 minutes as people disembark.

“Our system can adapt in real-time to the operating parameters, ensuring that it does not negatively impact the way the engine operates. Rypos ensures that the engine does not consume excess fuel, to run the filter optimally,” says Anderson.

This is in contrast with passive filters, where without sufficient heat, the system has to burn extra carbon to remove carbon, that is, burn more diesel fuel to burn off or regenerate the filter, capturing the PM. Not only does this increase the cost associated with fuel consumption, but the cost of environmental impact. Rypos systems are the solution.
