Xilinx Introduces Record-Breaking Large Programmable Chip with 9M Logic Cells

New generation FPGA made with 9 million system logic cells that can be applied in aerospace, defense, and many more sectors.

FREMONT, CA: Xilinx, the inventor of FPGA, programmable SoCs and the ACAP and leader in adaptive and intelligent computing, announced the world’s largest FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). The new generation FPGA is made with 9 million system logic cells. Developers utilize FPGA to write and load software onto the chip to execute command and functions. 

Built with 35 billion transistors, the VU19P provides the highest logic density and I/O count that is 2,072 I/Os for a single device. The newly developed VU19P enables emulation and prototyping of tomorrow’s most advanced ASIC and SoC technologies. The new field-programmable circuit can be used in advanced applications, including compute, networking, aerospace, and defense. It is expected in the fall of 2020.

The VU19P comes with an expanded bandwidth up to 1.5 terabits per second (tbps) of DDR4 memory and up to 4.5 tbps of transceiver bandwidth. It is 1.6X more extensive than its predecessor, 20 nm Virtex UltraScale 440 FPGA, whereas the newly developed FPGA belongs to 16nm Virtex UltrasScale+ family. While enabling prototyping and emulation, VU19P allows the development of emerging complex algorithms applied in artificial intelligence, video processing, machine learning, and sensor fusion.

Being third generation FPGA, it is more than a silicon technology supported by robust tool flows, extensive set of debug and IT. Thus it acts as a comprehensive development platform to rapidly design and validate next-generation applications and technologies. Along with the platform, the co-validation of hardware and software allows developers to bring up the software and implement custom features before physical parts are available. Xilinx Vivado Design Suite, a proprietary suite, also enables the co-optimization of design flow provided with advantages like cost reduction, improved efficiency, and time-to-market.

Xilinx devices best suits the next generation processor IP and SoC technology as it is employed by Arm in their process of validation. Also, the new VU19P will further enable Arm, and many others in the ecosystem, to accelerate the design, development, and validation of the most ambitious roadmap technologies.
