Drones have garnered widespread popularity due to their ability to capture captivating aerial imagery that can benefit and reshape sectors like agriculture and logistics.

Backed by these cutting-edge capabilities, drone technology drives significant social progress, especially in disaster-prone places like Haiti, where it enables users to swiftly assess calamity damage, transport medical supplies, and optimize agricultural processes. It boosts environmental initiatives, offers educational content, and supports data-driven decision-making, bridging gaps in resource-limited areas to become catalysts for positive change.

Leading the charge in this endeavor is Haiti Drone Services (HDS).

The company acknowledges the pivotal role of agriculture, which accounts today for 18 percent of Haiti’s GDP, employing 50 percent of its population, and the obstacles hindering its progress. This drives HDS to harness drone technology for transformation across farmlands and construction sites. Combining proficiency in agronomy, precise construction site assessments, advanced 3D modeling techniques, and other relevant domains, it delivers innovative solutions and impactful outcomes.

“Driven by the aspiration to create a positive social impact, our current endeavors are firmly anchored in the pursuit of enhancing agriculture and environmental stewardship,” says Muller-Poitevien, president of HDS.

Making a Positive Impact on Haiti’s Economy

The journey of HDS began when Muller-Poitevien’s son, a recent university graduate, recognized the potential of drones in various applications. At the time, drones were in their infancy, and their possibilities were just beginning to emerge. Determined to bring this transformative technology to Haiti, he convinced his father, an experienced engineer and architect with over 40 years in the construction industry to team up with him.

Together, they embarked on a journey of exploration and education, attending the 2016 InterDrone conference in Las Vegas. That event was a game changer allowing the team to gain a deeper understanding of the drone industry’s future and its potential to revolutionize numerous sectors.

Upon returning to Haiti, they realized that their mission extended beyond just having an idea. To make a real impact, they needed to build a company capable of offering drone services in specific industries. Leveraging their extensive network in the construction and agricultural sectors, HDS was born.

Their initial goal was to provide valuable drone services to the construction, agriculture, and environmental sectors, as drone technology could greatly enhance efficiency and accuracy in these areas.

Today, the company has emerged from the fusion of cutting-edge technology and the determination to make a positive impact on Haiti’s economy and environment.

Enhancing Agriculture and Environmental Stewardship

HDS actively engages in customized aerial inspections to enhance crop health assessment and promote best practices among prominent enterprises. It offers search and rescue services, providing critical aid during hurricanes without requiring extensive resource allocation. The company also excels in solar panel inspection for optimal functionality and works with municipal councils to improve urban planning and local governance and increase municipal revenue.

It conducts dedicated training to educate and equip agriculture students with vital drone-based skills and empower them to become future leaders. HDS has partnered with universities in Haiti to teach students about drone technology, focusing on the practical applications of drones in their final year of study. The initiative not only empowers the next generation with valuable skills but fosters a greater sense of environmental responsibility. This emphasis on education underscores its commitment to social responsibility over profits.

Addressing Distinct Needs

Beyond educational initiatives, HDS is developing a cutting-edge image interpretation platform offering realtime visualization of crop health data, enabling farmers to make informed decisions. This solution will empower entrepreneurs to view the results of remote sensing missions while tracking key indicators across their lands. It comprises two core components developed to address distinct needs.

One is the web-based interface that provides clients with secure access to a wealth of information, while the other is an analytics engine. Through the online portal, users can view and download information, including images and reports derived from remote sensing missions.

The second component comprehends the requirements of every crop type and aids HDS’ proficient developer team in creating specialized modules tailored to client needs. It also provides statistical tools to gauge agricultural activities’ environmental and social impacts. Ultimately, the platform seamlessly incorporates traceability to assist clients in meeting market demands and building a strong reputation.

Preventing Unrealistic Expectations

Central to HDS’ success is its compact yet dynamic team comprising eight professionals who synergize their diverse skills and knowledge to realize the company’s objective of improving the global socioeconomic environment.

Guided by this dedicated group, HDS performs in-depth consultations, assessing whether a client is informed of their land’s accurate size before providing vital insights to empower informed decisions and timely adjustments.

The company conducts meticulous land surveys to determine the actual land area, preventing unrealistic expectations related to crop cultivation. It then evaluates the environmental context, strategically mapping water sources and distances to optimal access points. The assessment also covers the plantation layout.

Beyond Just Drone

Services In 2016, HDS provided data to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to evaluate the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew and subsequent environmental recovery in the South of Haiti.

Matti Lehtonen of UN Environment says, “Arial imagery and geo-referenced data provided by HDS has been very helpful in analyzing the state of the environment in the South of Haiti. Drone surveys of the mangroves of La Cahouane or forests of the Macaya National Natural Park have given a bird’s eye view of the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew and subsequent environmental recovery. Technologies used by HDS are a valuable support to the process of establishing a management plan for Port Salut, Abacou Marine Protected Area, led by the Ministry of Environment together with its local partners.”

These competencies have helped HDS assist numerous clients. In a recent six-month collaboration in a pilot project with a rice producer, the company integrated drone-derived data on plantation health to improve the rice field up to 4.5 tons per hectare.

Powered by successes like this, HDS stands at the precipice of introducing a groundbreaking service centered on agricultural drones for the precise fertilization of croplands. Its mission for the upcoming years is spearheading the transformation of the Haitian agriculture sector with holistic solutions encompassing education, technology, and tangible applications.

The future for HDS extends beyond offering drone services. The company is working on developing innovative tools to complement drone technology in agriculture, particularly in crop mapping and creating a virtual marketplace for farmers. Additionally, HDS aims to assist farmers in securing their land, addressing land ownership issues prevalent in many developing countries.

“We are not just a drone company; we are a driving force behind positive change in Haiti’s key industries,” says Muller-Poitevien. “Our commitment to education, innovation, and environmental responsibility sets us apart as a company that is not only making a difference today but also shaping a sustainable future for Haiti.”
