Mansour Masoudi, R&D Director Emissol is a dedicated carbon capture technology start-up specializing in developing and implementing innovative solutions to reduce carbon (CO
2) emissions. Recognizing the urgent need to address our climate change, Emissol focuses on capturing and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Leveraging its expertise in Direct Air Capture (DAC) of CO
2, Emissol technology revolutionizes carbon capture methods for a sustainable future.
“We believe CO
2 capture from the air will be the next mother lode”, states Mansour Masoudi, R&D director at Emissol, and continuing “CO
2 will become a massive commodity, and its capture from the air will be good both for the climate and for forming a major, new, sustainable market.”
Emissol’s cutting-edge technology device acts as a sponge that selectively pulls CO
2 from the air while leaving other components untouched, “we extract CO
2 directly from the atmosphere. It enables an efficient capture process at less than half the cost of existing solutions, making it an accessible and scalable option for low-cost carbon capture.”
Where once capturing CO
2 was deemed improbable due to its substantial cost, Emissol solution overcomes that difficulty: “Our contactor, or our ‘CO
2 sponge’, is smaller, and needs far less adsorbent to perform its capture process.” Mansour Masoudi continues: “A 2019 analysis by the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering shows future carbon capture plants, targeting one million tons of CO
2 capture annually, will need massive assemblies of contactors. Our downsized contactor helps appreciably reduce their footprints.
That’s not all; in many cases, capture operations need expensive, durable adsorbents coated on these contactors. As our technology requires less adsorbent, that too saves substantial costs. Long story short, our cost analysis shows our highly efficient, smaller contactor is capable of cutting CO
2 capture cost in about half”, he said, “a major enabler”.
The proprietary design of the Emissol contactor uses chaotic, advective flows for highly efficient CO
2 capture. As air passes through the contactor, the chaotic flow pattern in the contactor channels enables significantly faster CO
2 capture. It maximizes efficiency through convection, a more effective capture mechanism than the commonly-used diffusion method used in mainstream technologies, “This is our competitive edge”, Masoudi highlights.

Our cutting-edge technology captures CO2 from air at costs well below that of other technologies. I have no doubt, our technology will be a player in the rapidly-forming carbon capture market: It is all about costs. Low-cost solutions will be the winners
Another modeling case study compared pressure drop, energy consumption, adsorbent cost, and CO
2 capture in other technologies to the same metrics in the Emissol approach. By applying different versions of Emissol’s solutions based on requirements and Emissol’s home-grown algorithm for CO
2 capture optimization, more CO
2 can be captured at a lower cost. These benefits position Emissol’s technology as a leading player in the emerging carbon (CO
2) capture industry. The company stands out as a game changer in the carbon capture industry due to its team’s unique expertise: Its strong group of scientists, coherent, rigorous mathematical models, along with their collaborations with several national labs and universities have enabled Emissol to develop robust and reliable solutions. Its outstanding track record includes receiving nearly $4.5 M in awards from the US government for its R&D, with nearly $2 M of that for developing its CO
2 capture technology alone, demonstrating solid recognition and support. Since last year, Emissol has won two R&D-100 Award recognitions and one European award, further validating its technologies’ impact.
By implementing Emissol’s solutions, industries can make notable progress toward achieving sustainability goals while minimizing cost and maximizing efficiency for a cleaner and greener future.
