MAY - JUNE, 20206 Rachel SmithManaging EditorAchieving Sustainability is the only way ForwardThe realities of the sustainability challenges we face are growing dramatically by the day, posing a huge threat to humanity. Many researchers predict that global temperatures would increase by 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, and could even go up to 6 degrees. If we stop and analyze, even the smallest of temperature change could spell disaster for the Earth, leaving us in a appalling situation with risen sea levels, crop failures, intense droughts, and extreme weather. To our fortune, many organizations and governments across the world are ramping up to lead and drive change that's not only good for their business, but the world in general-- especially companies in the technology sector. 2019 saw numerous tech companies driving eco-innovation by taking measurable steps to improve sustainability. From improved charging options for electric cars to sustainable smart city technology to a focus on eco-friendly event venues to edible packaging, organizations pondered upon how technology could be leveraged to improve a company's environmental performance as well as its bottom line. As such, the world witnessed many new innovation that's set to take shape in 2020. One of the biggest changes expected is in the way plastics get recycled. As most of the world's plastics don't get recycled at conventional plants, researchers experimenting with an alternative called chemical recycling for common plastics. This process breaks plastics down into their raw materials, and has the potential to transform it into things like diesel. Considering that many enterprises use plastic for various purposes, this pioneering method can help them become more sustainable. Another emerging technology that's helping organizations make strides in achieving sustainability is blockchain. Though the distributed ledger system is commonly associated with cryptocurrencies, it can be used for waste management purposes. Furthermore, a variety of apps, platforms and other technologies are being built based on the concept of a circular economy which focuses on eliminating waste by sharing resources. For example, there are apps that help enterprises to share their resources and let others know what's available, as opposed to discarding it in a non-eco friendly manner. This is just one of the many examples of how easy it is for companies to get involved in the circular economy with minimal effort.Technology is changing the way we do business, but it can also accelerate efforts to tackle the climate crisis. The increasing applications for sustainability technology have paved the way for numerous companies to innovate while opening the doors for new startups providing industry-specific offerings. In this edition of Enterprise Technology Review, attention is given to those enterprises, which have presented the latest solutions to enhance the efficiency and productivity, while ensuring sustainability.
